Background Checks Split Matchmaking Sites
USA Today

A debate among online dating companies over whether their websites should be required to say whether they do criminal background checks on clients has spilled over into state legislatures, a reflection of the websites' rising competitiveness. Read the whole story >

Matchmaking Online: Is It Love Or A Lie?
The Miami Herald

Internet dating sites such as Yahoo Personals and Match.com will rake in more than $500 million this year in an industry increasingly under fire from customers who believe they were ripped off. Read the whole story >

Yahoo To Plug Security Hole In Dating Site
The Miami Herald

Yahoo plans to tighten security on its dating site after a security expert uncovered a method for breaking into members' accounts. Specifically, Yahoo plans to change the way it updates the age field in members' profiles. Its current method could allow a hacker to guess a member's birthday, which could help the hacker, in turn, reset the member's password. There's a similar risk with ZIP codes, Haselton said. And it's possible to create an automated system to monitor the site for clues, he said. Read the whole story >

Friends with benefits. Buddies. Booty calls. Is this what dating has become?
The Seattle Times

Today's dating scene is about as easy to pigeonhole as the color of paint. Sure, there are plenty of traditionalists out there, but there are many others who don't date so much as hang out or hook up (AXE, which makes male grooming products, even named Seattle "the best city in America for hooking up"). Some rely on what I'll politely call "bed buddies" to get them through the lonely times. Others turn to their friends or neighbors for that occasional cup of sugar. But Bob's proposition seemed curious even for these bi-curious times. When, I wondered, had friends with benefits turned into strangers with benefits? What exactly was going on Out There? People In Relationships Are Generally Happier Than Other People
Cornell University

People in relationships are generally happier than other people, a new Cornell University study finds. And spouses have the highest sense of well-being, whether they are happily married or not. The study of measures of well-being and happiness found that people who cohabit are next on the scale of happiness, followed by those in steady relationships and then those in casual relationships. Unpartnered people report the lowest levels of well-being. The bottom line, say the researchers, is that having a romantic relationship makes both men and women happier -- and the stronger the relationship's commitment, the greater the happiness and sense of well-being of the partners. Nude 'Profile' Yields Yahoo Suit
CNET NEWS

Cecilia Barnes sued Yahoo after ex-boyfriend allegedly posted a personal profile with nude photos of Barnes and her work contact information. A US District Judge in Oregon ruled on Nov 8 dismissing the case. The judge ruled that a string of precedents, including the 1997 Zeran v. America Online decision, immunized Yahoo from such lawsuits. Blind Dating Gets Back In The Game
USA Today

Friends don't let friends date guys like Spank Me Frank, who took a gander at Ashley Nichols' derrière during their first and only rendezvous and declared, "I want to spank it later." Nor do friends let friends meet men like the one who romanced Kristen Howey with a comped "blue-hair hour" buffet at a "cheesy" Las Vegas hotel. "He pulled out these coupons, and I just thought, 'You've got to be kidding me,' " Howey recalls. In this increasingly difficult dating world, friends — and cousins and aunts and their hairdressers — are the first line of defense against, at the very least, a dismal evening and, at the worst, a dangerous liaison. New Online Dating Website ~ Relaxed Environment For Shy Singles
The Open Press

Meeting new people can be difficult, especially when you are shy. While extroverts may lock eyes, smile, and walk over to introduce themselves when they are interested, introverts will often do the exact opposite. Rather than locking eyes, shy people can find themselves looking down or looking away, even though they may be interested. Shyness can look coy and cute from the outside, but it can sometimes be terribly difficult for the person dealing with it. Whether someone is looking for new friends, or something more, Shy Passions is designed to help shy singles take that first step. Read the whole story >

New Online Dating Website ~ Caters To Singles Who Prioritize Physical Fitness
PR Leap

Why try and fit a square peg into a round whole for the sake of attracting huge numbers to online personals? One recent addition to the free personals world on the Internet realizes that it pays to be picky. In the case of the online dating service, Fitness Singles, the emphasis falls on the word "fitness." Not that you have to have the abs of wrestler The Rock, or the legs of Olympic figure skating champion Sarah Hughes. On the other hand, if doing "12 ounce curls" and shopping at the mall meet your definition of "exercise," then you need not apply. This online personals Website is for single men and single women who wish to meet with other singles who value the importance of working towards staying in shape. Read the whole story >

New Online Dating Website ~ Offers Privacy To Daters Who Aren’t Single
AxcessNews

According to PDFC, research shows that over 30 percent of existing online date site members are either married or in relationships. However, no one has addressed this large segment of the online dating population who desire real privacy, or those who have never used online dating services because they didn't want anyone else to know. They simply do not want to get caught, which this website says it has the answers to. Frankly, I find that a bit off - to promote a place to cheat. Why not call the site CheatingPartnerFinders? What's your take on women "testing" men? Does this happen often? And what can a guy do to pass these tests? A friend of mine who is awesome with women recently told me that he learned everything he needed to know about women from a 19-year-old girl. They were having a conversation about dating and relationships, and she put it this way: "A woman's job is to always try to take control of the man, and a man's job is to never let that happen."
